Sure, you can upgrade to a new OS, as long as you have a valid license and as long as the PC hardware is compatible. NO! It is not legal to use an OEM key on any machine other than the one that the sticker is on.

I presume that if I want to upgrade a dell machine (eg from vista to 7 or 8, or 7 to 8) then the new disk plus key will install ok?It means that on a Dell machine you would need to enter the key manually and then activate the machine via Internet or phone. :)īut does this mean that a Dell OEM windows disc won't install windows on another non-dell machine? Or does it mean it *will* install but won't accept (or ask for) a non-dell but valid key for that machine (ie the one that came with the other PC)?Īnd if the Dell product key hasn't actually been used, will it work on a non-dell machine? I notice lots of people selling OEM discs with a dell product key. I thought some might find it interesting knowing a little more about the most common practice for that, since I had a bit of first-hand insight about it.

I have worked and still work in an authorized HP repair center that gives me access to their internal tattoo tool, however it is a ROYAL PAIN to do even with the tools when a tattoo becomes corrupt (and more often ends up requiring dispatch to a full service center to resolve). If the tattoo does not match the one that the media is looking for, then the recovery fails and you usually get a message to the effect of "this media is not intended for this system" or some such. The recovery media you obtain from the OEM is keyed to locate the specific Tattoo that the media are imaged for, to ensure that the image will load successfully because it is going on the right hardware (and to prevent piracy as mentioned previously). One cannot re-write it without the OEM tools, as it resides on dedicated physical hardware on the PCB in most cases. It is both an anti-piracy tool, as well as a quality control tool.

This Tattoo is a custom, proprietary identification marker that is used to identify the exact model of the unit for recovery purposes.

Most major manufacturers (Dell basically being the only exclusion until windows 8) actually use what they call a "Tattoo" at the firmware level to every one of their machines. I would like to clarify a bit for some of you about how MFG units do their restorations. The key you are finding IS for windows 7 though - the key finders check the OS and pull a key. Your license is valid, but getting Windows 7 installed without a key doesn't go over very well. If you don't though, you may have some trouble. If you have OEM media from Dell for Windows 7 you don't need a key, because you'll never be asked for it. It might be that the Win 8 sticker computers don't actually get Win 7 keys (even if you ordered Win 7).

If you use the COA on the sticker during an install it should work, but usually requires you to call in to the phone activation service. If you need to re-install, but don't have the OEM disks and try to use that key (if you found it with a keyfinder) it should give an error during activation, saying something like it's an invalid key. That COA is what a keyfinder will find and it won't work for activation via Internet - it only works with the auto activation that happens during install from the OEM disks. They have a factory COA in them so when you use their disks to do a factory reinstall you don't need to enter anything. It may have been before that, but XP is when I first noticed it.ĭell (and other brand) OEM install CDs check BIOS for activation. and just having the sticker covers you. They started this with XP I believe. if you use the provided restore DVDs? you never have to input the CD key for the OS.
